Description

Historical Significance: Commemorating Delaware's admission as the first U.S. state to join the Union on December 7, 1787, the coin focuses on the story of Revolutionary War hero Caesar Rodney, who rode 80 miles in torrential rain to Philadelphia in 1776 to cast the crucial vote that led to the passage of the Declaration of Independence.

Series Positioning: This is the first coin issued in the U.S. "50-State Commemorative Coin Program," kicking off a decade-long series of state-themed commemorative coins.

Obverse:
Core Design: A left-hand portrait of George Washington, based on the classic 1932 design by John Flanagan, updated slightly by William Cousins in 1999.

Reverse:
Core image: A dynamic scene of Caesar Rodney galloping on horseback, his horse's front hooves in the air, expressing his urgency as he rushes to Philadelphia.

Inscription layout:

Upper arc: "THE FIRST STATE" (Delaware's nickname).

Bottom: "CAESAR RODNEY" and the year of admission, "1787".

This silver coin is a dual symbol of the American spirit of independence and the history of state commemorative coins.
