Description

Commemorating the historic Old Spanish Trail of the American Southwest, this rare 1935 half dollar was minted in El Paso, Texas. It honors Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca and the legendary trade routes he helped establish.

Obverse Design

Central Motif: A bull's head, symbolizing the nickname of Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, whose 16th-century expedition the coin commemorates. The bull's head is rendered in high relief with detailed anatomical features (e.g., prominent horns, textured fur)

Reverse Design

Primary Elements: A blooming yucca plant superimposed over a stylized map of the U.S. Gulf Coast states (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas).

A dashed line tracing a purported route from Florida to El Paso, Texas, labeled "OLD SPANISH TRAIL". Note: This route is historically inaccurate, as Cabeza de Vaca never reached El Paso.

Design Controversy

Historical Falsification:
The trail route and inclusion of "1535" (a year with no significance to Cabeza de Vaca's journey) were fabrications by Hoffecker to promote his hometown.

Aesthetic Criticism:
The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts objected to placing "LIBERTY" on a ribbon (typically reserved for mottos), later relocated between the bull's horns.

Ethical Issues:
Hoffecker privately profited from sales under the guise of a "museum committee," a scheme criticized as "politicking" (Q. David Bowers).
