Description

The Standing Liberty Silver Quarter was first struck in 1916. The design by famed sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil was selected in a competition and was part of the movement inspired by President Theodore Roosevelt to create more beautiful and distinctive American coins.

Obverse (Statue of Liberty)

  • Main Design: The Statue of Liberty stands in the center of the porch, facing right (symbolizing the European battlefield), holding an olive branch (peace) in her right hand and a shield (defense) in her left.
  • Inscription: "IN GOD WE TRUST" is engraved on the lintel, surrounded by 13 stars (representing the 13 founding states of the United States).

Reverse (Eagle)

  • Main Design: The eagle with outstretched wings symbolizes strength and freedom.
  • Star Arrangement:
    In the original 1916-1917 edition, 13 stars surrounded the eagle.
    After 1917, seven stars were moved above the eagle, three were placed between the words "QUARTER DOLLAR," and three remained below.
  • Special elements: In some versions from 1916 to 1917, a dolphin was added below the eagle's wings to represent the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans bordering the United States.

The Standing Liberty Quarter represents both artistic and controversial moments in American coin history:

  • Design Innovation: The first circulating coin to depict Lady Liberty in motion and a naturalistic eagle in flight, breaking with traditional heraldic style;
  • Historical Imprint: The military symbolism (shield and facing Europe) against the backdrop of World War I reflects the spirit of the times.

The coin was short-lived and last appeared in 1930. It was replaced with the Washington Silver Quarter in 1932 to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. (No Quarters were made in 1931.)

Design Evolution and Versions:

  • 1916: First edition, with the goddess's right breast exposed and 13 stars surrounding the back.
  • 1917 Model 1: The goddess's chest is covered with chain mail, and the dolphin remains below the eagle's wings.
  • 1917 Model 2: The dolphin is removed, and the star pattern is adjusted (7 above, 3 in the middle, and 3 below).
  • 1925-1930: The date notch is deepened to prevent wear, and the line of the goddess's skirt is more clearly defined.
